Mitä odottaa

Our day begins with a comfortable drive east from Riga towards Cēsis, one of Latvia's oldest and most charming towns. Along the way, the flat Riga plain gives way to rolling hills, dense pine forests, and the unmistakable sense that you're entering a different Latvia — wilder, quieter, and deeply connected to the land.

Our first stop is an artisan bread maker on the outskirts of Cēsis. Latvian dark rye bread isn't just food — it's practically a national symbol. You'll see how it's made the traditional way, learn why every Latvian family has an opinion about bread, and taste it fresh from the oven.

Then we walk through old Cēsis and enter its medieval castle, built by the Livonian Order in the 13th century. You explore the towers by candlelight, with a lantern in hand — it's genuinely magical and utterly unlike a polished museum experience.

After a hearty local lunch, we drive into the Gauja Valley to visit Sigulda Castle ruins and the Turaida Castle — the iconic red-brick fortress overlooking the valley. Before heading home, we stop at the photography vantage point that earned this valley its nickname: the Switzerland of Latvia.

Who this day is for

Nature lovers. People who want forests, valleys, and medieval ruins rather than gilded interiors. Families with active kids. Bread lovers — the artisan rye bread baking is a highlight most people don't expect. Photographers, especially in autumn.

One thing people miss

The view from Turaida Castle tower in the late afternoon, when the Gauja Valley fills with shadow and the forest canopy turns amber. Most groups rush through. Don't.

Seasonal variation

Late September to mid-October for spectacular autumn colours — the valley earns its "Switzerland of Latvia" nickname. Summer for the longest days and warmest bread-baking experience. Spring for wildflowers on the forest floor.
